comparison of Vietnam and Korea” held
In cooperation with the Institute of History, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS), the Foundation hosted a joint academic conference under the theme of “Formation of countries transcending time and space: comparison of Vietnam and Korea” at its grand conference room on June 21. The Foundation signed a business accord with VASS in 2017. Five researchers from the Foundation and six from VASS made presentations during the academic conference, the first of its kind held between the Foundation and VASS. Parts 1, 2, and 3 were themed with “land and sea,” “before the modern era,” and “the modern era,” respectively. The Foundation expects the conference to help Korea and Vietnam promote their mutual understanding and contribute to beefing up their bilateral friendship, amity, and academic exchange further.

As part of its 2019 visiting Dokdo exhibitions, the Foundation will hold the “East Sea-Dokdo Map Show” at Gwang Art Gallery in Gwanghwamun Station for three months from July 5 through Sept. 30. The show, which will display historical data and old maps related to the East Sea and Dokdo, is to be held in Gwanghwamun in the aftermath of the same exhibition held at the National Library of Korea, Sejong, Sejong Metropolitan Autonomous City, which was well received. The exhibition will be co-hosted by the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts and its exhibition venue “Gwang Art Gallery” is an area with heavy foot traffic, located in the underground passage of Gwanghwamun Station. It is highly hoped that the map show will contribute a great deal to publicizing Dokdo in the international community because Gwanghwamun is frequented by many foreign travelers. Admission to the exhibition is free from 11 a.m. to 8: 30 p.m. every day and will be closed only during the Chuseok holiday in September.

Eleven Korean scholars and seven Mongolian scholars attended the conference to speak on Korean and Mongolian history, linguistics, and cooperation in East Asia and looked for ways to elevate the Korea-Mongolia relationship to a new partnership. The conference ended in a great success in the presence of Mongolia’s inaugural President Ochirbat (photo), third President Nambaryn Enkhbayar, as well as Mongolia’s prominent scholars. In his congratulatory and closing speeches, Foundation President Kim Do-hyung said, “Korea and Mongolia have similarities in that they fell victim to history distortion by powerful nations and I hope that the conference, held to promote the Korea-Mongolia relationship, will pave the way for brisk academic exchange in the future.”
Third Korea-China History Forum held
The Foundation’s Institute on International Relations and Historical Dialogue held the third Korea-China History Forum under the theme of “Sharing of historical perception and Korea-China relations for East Asian peace community” in Beijing on July 13 with Peking University’s department of history. The Foundation has been supervising the forum since last year and is running the forum in the presence of 12 historians and 12 experts on international relations from the two countries to carry out interdisciplinary research. In the history department of the conference themed with “Era of Korea-China cooperation in the 21st century: roots and tasks of nationalistic history perception,” Jeon In-gap (Sogang University), Kim Seong-bo (Yonsei University), Han Myeong-gi (Myongji University), Wang Wienzou (Peking University), Xing Lizwi (Fudan University) and Li Tingting (Peking University) made presentations. The department of international relations was themed with “Peace regime on the Korean Peninsula and new evolution of Korea-China relations” and speakers were Zhang Xiaoming (Peking University), Tong Zie (Party School of the Central Committee of C.P.C), Song Won Zhu (Nanjing University), Lee Hee-ok (Sungkyunkwan University), Lee Hye-jeong (Chung-Ang University), and Cha Jae-bok (Foundation). This year’s conference was quite meaningful in predicting conflict and cooperation in Korea-China relations, reflecting the history perception in China’s academic world sympathizing with “Xi Jinping, new era” in accordance with the distinct characteristics of Chinese politics and the realities of the “new age on the Korean Peninsula” embracing “dialogue.” What resulted from the forum will be published in the first half of 2020 after the fourth forum in Seoul in November.
