of Balhae

Founded by Daejoyeoung, one of the drifting people of Koguryo, Balhae enriched our history through its remarkable development into what was known as the Culturally Advanced Nation East of the Sea. The site of Kraskino Fortress in the Khasansky District of Russia is close to the Korean Peninsula across the Duman River bordered with China, and it was referred to as Yeomju (鹽州) during the Balhae period. The Kraskino Fortress site is an important site because it proves that Balhae, as a base for exchange between Silla and Japan, was active in exchange with other countries and diverse in its culture and that it also maintained its unique culture while inheriting that of Koguryo. The NAHF has excavated and investigated the Kraskino Fortress site every summer since its foundation in 2006, and, through this year's investigation, proved that Balhae had planned and designed a city with well organized roads, not only in the capital but in the local fortress.
