Crow Like a Rooster, Snatch Like a Dog (鷄鳴狗盜) With the arrival of a new year, we always make resolutions for the year ahead and vow to see them through. Of course, we are well aware that things don't always go as planned. Yet, such resolutions should at least be able to guide us in the right direction. Because what matters is the direction and intention we have in mind for those resolutions, not whether we're able to fulfill them or not. And having already served as president of the Northeast Asian History Foundation for two months, now seems to be a good time to remind myself of the resolution I made when I first took office.

메이지유신과 테러의 논리, 그리고 ‘존왕’의 안과 밖
The Meiji Restoration, Terrorism, and "Revering the Emperor" The year 2018 marks the 150th anniversary of the Meiji Restoration in Japan. Despite its multiple facets, the Meiji Restoration is generally regarded as an event that internally prevented Japan from being colonized by the West and externally enabled Japan to invade and colonize its neighboring countries. Such invasions and colonizations continue to be sources of ongoing diplomatic friction between Korea, China, and Japan today, which in turn attests to the aggressive, violent nature of those who led the Meiji Restoration.

In Search of a New Narrative for East Asian History On the 20th and 21st of November 2017, the Northeast Asian History Foundation jointly held an international academic conference with Academia Sinica's Institute of Modern History under the theme "Reframing East Asian History during the Cold War: Thoughts, Research, and Ideologies." The conference hosted a total of four sessions participated by 20 or so Korean, Taiwanese, Japanese, and Vietnamese scholars who eagerly discussed various topics, research methodologies, and experiences of the Cold War in their respective countries.

폴란드-독일의 역사화해 사례로 본 동북아시아 역사분쟁의 해결 방안
Polish Inspirations for Historical Reconciliation in Northeast Asia On November 13, 2017, the Northeast Asian History Foundation jointly held an international conference at Lublin, Poland with the Institute of East-Central Europe. Under the theme "Relations with Neighboring Countries in East Asia and Central and Eastern Europe: The Past and Prospects for Reconciliation," the conference aimed at having Korea and Poland share their historical experiences of being colonized and carrying out independence movements. Another purpose for hosting the event was to gain inspirations for resolving historical disputes in Northeast Asia from Poland and Germany's experience in historical reconciliation.

강대국 사이에서 정나라의 자존심을 지킨 자산
Zichan, the Defender of Zheng's Pride Late into the Spring and Autumn period when the two Chinese states Jin (晉) and Chu (楚) struggled for supremacy, the state of Zheng (鄭) had to be tactful because it was geographically stuck between Jin and Chu. In 565 B.C., Gongzi Fa (公子發) and Gongsun Zhe (公孫輒) of Zheng happened to attack the state Cai (蔡) and bring back as prisoner Sima (司馬) Gongzi Xie (公子燮), the marshal of Cai. It was an occasion to celebrate for the people of a state as small and weak as Zheng, but there was one boy who instead lamented the incident.
