Historical Dialogue in East Asia, Rising Above the Challenge of Asymmetry Historical dialogue in East Asia is a challenge because there is marked asymmetry among the countries, unlike in Europe made up of similar countries." Although exchanges across East Asia are on the rise, conflicts caused by differences in the perception of history remain unresolved. At the core, there is a conflict between the self-reflective and self-important views of history. With the self-reflective view of history, a country would reflect on the violence it used on its neighbors. With the self-important view of history, on the other hand, a country would refuse to do so, often denying the independence of the history of its neighbors for the glory of the history of their own.

Matray, CSU, Chico "Not that South Korea 'induced' North Korea to attack, but that North Korea attacked South Korea 'pre-emptively' for fear that South Korea becomes stronger and capable of reuniting the Korean Peninsula" "As far as North Korea defends its current system, the armistice structure will continue to exist" The year 2013 marks the 60th anniversary of the armistice of the Korean War(1950-1953). On July 27, the Northeast Asian History Foundation(NAHF) and Korea University jointly held an international conference marking the 60th anniversary of the Korean Armistice Agreement. Professor James I. Matray of California State University, Chico, who was an invited presenter at the conference, delivered a special lecture entitled "Eisenhower and Korea : Still a Matter of Debate." Dr. Seol Wontai, senior administrator at the Office of Public Relations and Education of NAHF, met Professor Matray at the conference and continued their conversation via e-mail for an in-depth interview. The oral and written interview started by asking about the implications of the 60th anniversary of the Korean War armistice.

Chinese President Xi Jinping's "Great Revival of the Chinese People" and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's "Revival of Japan" On September 11, 2012, Japan nationalized three of the Senkaku Islands. Fifteen days later, on September 26, Shinzo Abe, campaigning under the slogan 'Revival of Japan, Strong Japan,' was elected the president of the LDP. The officially launched Abe Cabinet gained popularity with Abenomics, and secured a landslide win in the upper-house election on July 21, 2003. Meanwhile, in China, Vice President Xi Jinping was elected to the post of General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission by the 18th Central Committee of the CPC in November 2012. And Xi Jinping's first words as General Secretary were: "Great revival for the Chinese people."

1910년 한일병합조약 원천무효 한일지식인 공동성명문 수록 『한일강제병합 100년의 역사와 과제』"한국과 일본에서 광복절에 동시 출간"

The Centennial History and Challenges of Japan's Forced Annexation of Korea published in both Korea and Japan on August 15, 2013 (Includes the text of the Joint Statement by Korean and Japanese Intellectuals Declaring the Invalidity of the 1910 Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty) The 2010 review of the centennial history and remaining challenges of Japan's forced annexation of Korea was published into a book both in Japan and Korea. After three years of preparation by the Northeast Asian History Foundation and the renowned Japanese publisher Akashi Shoten (明石書店), the Korean and Japanese editions of this book titled The Centennial History and Challenges of Japan's Forced Annexation of Korea were released on August 15, 2013, the 68th anniversary of Korea's independence from Japan. This book is also available in English edition, which is scheduled for release in early December by the University of Hawaii.

Roanoke College and Koreans, A Short History I first came to Korea to study the Korean language. There were only a very few Chinese students studying in Korea in the early 1990s, and it was quite a challenging decision for me to opt for a graduate program in Korean history there after only a brief period of language training. Fortunately, I was welcomed by a group of very supportive professors at Korea University, who not only very patiently and enthusiastically advised me about my academic work, but also helped me understand Korean culture and society. I joined them for a number of field trips to historical sites in Northeast China and Inner Mongolia that were important in the early history of Korea; this further stimulated me to continue my study of the ancient history of Korea.

베트남 독립운동가 판 보이 쩌우(Phan BÐội Châu, 1867~1940)의 생애

The Life of the Vietnamese Independence Activist Phan BÐội Châu (1867-1940) Phan BÐội Châu (潘佩珠) was born in Nam Đàn Prefecture, Nghệ An Province in Central Vietnam in late 1867, when the colonization of his country was underway in the south. At age five, Phan began receiving traditional Confucian education from his father. In 1885, shortly after his country was completely colonized, Phan organized a resistance force against France and participated in the movement to restore the Vietnamese Emperor's authority. When this movement ended in failure, he began preparing to take the exam to become a government official. Once he passed the exam, he decided to continue with his studies and went to Hanoi in 1897. Phan made friends with such government officials as Đặng Nguyên Cẩn and Nguyễn Thượng Hiền, who introduced him to the works of reformer Nguyễn Lộ Trạch, particularly the article "Thiên hạ đại thế luận (天下大勢論)," which got him interested in reformation thought.

A Report on the 19th International Seminar on Sea Names The 19th International Seminar on Sea Names, organized jointly by the Northeast Asian History Foundation, the East Sea Society, and Istanbul University, was held in Istanbul, Turkey, from August 22 to 24, 2013. The NAHF has been one of the co-organizers of this seminar since 2007. Major cities around the world take turns hosting this annual event. And this year's host was Istanbul. Having a seminar on sea names in this city was meaningful especially because of its location in the Bosphorus Strait, the center of the ancient Greek, Roman, and Osman cultures. the intersection of Asia and Europe, and the link between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. The event began at 9 A.M. on August 22 at Hilton Istanbul Hotel, with an opening speech by President of East Sea Society Park No-hyung, followed by NAHF Secretary General Seok Dong-yeon's keynote speech. In his speech, Mr. Seok explained the significance of this event and the status of discussion of the naming of East Sea in the international community, and demanded attention and support from the international community.

Why Has Control Over Strasbourg Changed As Many As 17 Times? Strasbourg, a city in France, is getting attention from Korean people recently once it appeared as one of the destinations in a popular reality TV show featuring old men in their 70s backpacking Europe. Located in the Alsace region of France, Strasbourg is also well known for its magnificent cathedral and Petite-France (small France), in which the Japanese animated film "Howl's Moving Castle" was set. Historically speaking, however, Strasbourg, as its German-ish name might suggest, was a region of bitter dispute between France and Germany. This city was the "dark spot" of France with a history of as many as 17 changes in control. Let us go back in time to the 1870 Franco-Prussian War and find out why Strasbourg and the Alsaces-Lorraine region became the "dark spot" with frequent changes in ownership.

A Research Agenda he United States supply of Korean scholars has been fortified by a series of mid- to late-twentieth century waves: first the military, then the Peace Corps, followed by the Mormon Church, English instructors, and now Koreans and Korean-American products of the United States education system. Throughout this time Japanese-centered scholars have revised their academic interests to include topics on the other side of the East Sea to enter Korean studies as well. My background mixes the English instructor/Japanese-centered categories that I entered from 1980. From 1991 I left this world to redirect my life into Asian studies with a particular focus on modern Korean history.
