The Stepping Stone to Historical Reconciliation - Introspections and Expectations on Korea-Japan Joint Historical Research - Under the initiative of President Yoon Sukyeol and the proactive response of Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, the once-frozen relations between Korea and Japan are rapidly improving. In order to continue fostering a friendly and cooperative atmosphere between Korea and Japan, it is necessary to promote historical reconciliation together. Given that conflicts over historical issues have been a significant cause of deteriorating Korea-Japan relations, historical reconciliation can be seen as the most crucial task and challenge in enhancing bilateral ties. Historical reconciliation refers to the process of ending conflicts and disputes over historical issues and establishing a friendly relationship. Its ultimate goal is to help both governments and their citizens form a sense of unity by alleviating hostility and distrust and building mutual respect and trust. Consequently, joint research and mutual understanding of historical issues are essential for historical reconciliation.

Efforts of Japanese Civil Society to Establish Proper Historical Perception In the modern ear, the Japanese government does not acknowledge the illegality of Japan's invasion and colonial rule of Korea. Furthermore, they deny legal responsibility and refuse to provide compensation for issues such as the Japanese military ‘comfort women’ and forced labor. Additionally, they have not taken any measures to prevent recurrence of such actions. I believe that the first step towards resolving these issues is for the Japanese government to conduct a thorough investigation of the past offenses, take legal responsibility, acknowledge, apologize, provide compensation, punish those responsible, and implement measures to prevent a recurrence.

The Association for Korean Studies in Europe Story of Academic Conference Participation The Association for Korean Studies in Europe(AKSE) is a representative organization for Koreanology research in Europe, hosting regular academic conferences every two years. This year, the 31st conference was held at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark from June 22nd to 25th. It was the first offline conference in four years since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, and thanks to the recent popularity of Korean popular culture, the conference achieved great success with a record attendance of 300 participants, the largest in the history of the association. There were 156 presenters in 40 panels among them. In terms of topics, unlike many academic conferences on Koreanology in the West that have focused on popular culture and modern history influenced by the Korean Wave, the AKSE conference largely focused on pre-modern fields. This is likely to reflects the strong tradition of European Koreanology, which emphasizes serious academic disciplines such as philosophy and history.

Tracing the Genealogy of the Korean ‘Modern Family’ - Family Policy of the Japanese Government-General of Korea: Colonialism, Family, Law, and Gender - The Northeast Asian History Foundation’s was designed to systematically research and compile the history of Japanese imperialism's invasion and colonization of the Korean Peninsula, and publish it as a series. It is composed of the data collection, research collection, and liberal arts collection, and is divided into political, economic, social, and cultural fields. Experts in the academic field are participating in the writing process. In the , we introduce one of the published volumes from the total compilation of Japanese invasion history.

Understanding Goguryeo People's Encounters, Love, and Marriage The past is always relative. To us living in the 21st century, all previous periods are considered the past, but to the people who lived during the Joseon Dynasty, that era was the present, not the past. However, whether in the present or in the past, one unchanging fact is that people have always lived, and even now and back then, people like us have lived and made history. Yet, there were differences. The conditions of life were different. Therefore, even though the same people existed, the way of life was vastly different from one another. The way people met, loved, and married was no exception.

Dano Festival in Korea, Dano National holiday The conflict between Korea and China has never been as serious as it is now. Not only is it a civilian conflict, but unfortunately, it has recently expanded to the political sphere. In fact, after the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and China, the real conflict began with the cultural dispute, in other words, ‘Dano dispute’ in the spring of 2004, according to the predominant view in academia. The one word, representing one of the significant national holidays of the East, ‘Dano’, has regrettably become a symbol of the cultural clash between Korea and China. As we know, both Korea and China have celebrated ‘Dano’ as an important folk national holiday on the fifth day of the lunar fifth month since ancient times. While there are common aspects in the records and customs related to Dano found in both countries’ literary records, there are also significant differences.
