The Past and Present of the Relationship between the Two Countries On March 26, 1990, Korea and Mongolia officially established diplomatic relations. So this year is exactly 30 years since the two countries established diplomacy. Over the past 30 years, the relationship between Korea and Mongolia has developed dramatically. It has expanded to full-scale exchanges, ranging from traditional international cooperation fields such as politics, economy, society, and culture to defense and religion. There are several reasons why the exchange between the two countries has expanded into all areas in a short period of time. The Korean government considered the relationship with Mongolia with the expansion of Nordpolitik (Diplomacy toward North) and North Korea in mind, and the businessmen paid attention to Mongolia as a base for securing raw materials including mine resources and entering the north. Another important reason is kind consciousness that 'Koreans and Mongolians have the same roots'.

Great Heritage Left by the Mongol Empire The emergence of the 13th century Mongolian Empire is one of the most surprising phenomena in world history. They started with a nomadic tribe, and they conquered the agricultural countries with a large mounted corps, and at the end they took control of the ocean and formed a huge political organization of the global scale. Finally, the Mongol Empire created an era called 'Pax Mongolica' and conquered Eurasian civilizations by embracing various cultures and religions. Who revealed the impact of this empire on the formation of East and West civilizations and world history, a pioneer of Mongolian Imperial History researchers who revived the history of nomadic peoples with objective and subjective perspectives. We met and talked with Kim Ho-dong, an honorary professor at Seoul National University, who raised the level of research in the History of Central Eurasia. The Joseon and Northeast Asia in the Book of Sadaemungwe A complete understanding of the relationship between Korea and China is essential to observing the changes in the situation in Northeast Asia today and to predict a constructive future in which countries in the region recognize and respect each other. As it is known, the colonial historiography formed during the Japanese colonial period emphasized external impacts in the relationship with China in Korean history, excluded internal power, and highlighted stagnation and heteronomy. In particular, the toadyism theory, armed with the paradigm of domination and subordination, was the backbone of distorting not only the Korean-Chinese relations before the 19th century but also the overall foreign relations of Korean history. Since liberation, Korean academia has been responding to colonial history by accumulating research on what the internal power of Korean history is. In the case of the study on foreign relations in the Joseon Dynasty, it was noted that there were multilateral complexities and multi-layeredness in the mechanism in which the order of Northeast Asia interacted. This study can be evaluated as an important achievement of this study by pointing out the error of colonial historiography based on reductionism to typicalize Joseon's foreign policy as 'diplomacy to serve a big country' or 'tribute system'.

Find the way to historical reconciliation Find the way to historical reconciliation 『A Milestone in Historical Reconciliation I』 NAHF has been working to deepen and spread its understanding of historical reconciliation since its establishment. In 2008, he published "Beyond the Divide between Harm and damage: The Way to Historical Reconciliation in Germany and Poland." In 2013, he held an academic conference at George Washington University on the theme of "History Reconciliation and Prosperity in Northeast Asia: 70 Years After the Cairo Declaration". We have continued the project with this interest in this topic.

『A New Verification of Ahn Yong-bok's Statement』 This book presents a new perspective on Ahn Yong-bok's statement at Bibyeonsa. It is characterized by the fact that Ulleungdo Jaenggye(Territorial Dispute over the Ulleung Island) and Ahn Yong-bok's first and second visits to Japan were described by making full use of Korean records. Until now, academia has mainly used and understood Japanese records because there are many records and contents are specific. However, although it is fragmentary, there are quite a lot of related records in Korea. This book is written with the utmost use of records that have not been used so far, and I think it will contribute to the reader's integrated understanding of the issue.

The Effect of the Treaty between Korea and Japan in the Modern Period The treaty and the relationship between Korea and Japan's Rights and Duties under international law began on February 27, 1876, from 「the Korea-Japan Treaty of Amity」(official name of the Ganghwa Treaty). Article 1 of 「the Korea-Japan Treaty of Amity in 1876」 stipulates that 'Joseon is an independent country and has equal rights with Japan'. As a result, all the treaties and regulations signed between Korea and Japan have been governed by international law. Among the treaties signed during the Japanese invasion of Korea, the most important treaties under international law are 「the Korea-Japan Protocol」 on February 23, 1904, 「the Eulsa Treaty」 on November 17, 1905, and 「the Treaty of Japan's Annexation of Korea」 in 1910. Controversy continues under international law as to the interpretation of the 1965 Treaty on the Basic Relations between Korea and Japan.

Keeping the memories of victims The history of ‘Sexual slavery victims for the Japanese imperial army’ to be used in the early 1990s, which is leading the recovery of world peace and human rights with a new perspective, new language, and new future. At the center was a survivor of the Japanese military sex slave. At the same time, there were activists, researchers, and citizens who were with the victim, found data, and gave meaning to the victim’s language. I want to record those moments and continue history in future generations.

The NAHF's News NAHF opened the retirement ceremony of Kim Eun-guk(Pre-modern Korean History) and Lee Myung-chan(Dokdo Research Institute) on June 23. Kim Eun-kook joined NAHF in 2006 and worked on the research of Balhae, including the excavation of Kraskino in the Maritime Province. Lee Myung-chan joined NAHF in 2008 and has made extensive research on diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan. At the retirement ceremony, we delivered plaques of appreciation and bouquets of flowers following the farewell speech and the retirement speech.
