10-Story Gyeongcheonsa Temple Stone Pagoda (National Treasure No. 86) The 10-Story Gyeongcheonsa Temple Stone Pagoda was built in Gyeongcheonsa-hyeon, Gaepung-gun, Gyeonggi-do, in 1348, the fourth year of Goryeo’s 29th King Chungmok. It was made of marble, a material that has rarely been found domestically. The pagoda was smuggled out of Korea into Japan in 1909 but was returned to Korea in 1918 due to continuous public demand. The pagoda was erected in the garden of Gyeongbokgung Palace in 1960 but underwent restoration work starting in 1995, having been corroded from air pollution, before being displayed inside the National Museum of Korea in 2005. Gang Yung, Go Yong-bo, and others built the pagoda to pray for Mongolian emperors’ longevity and good fortune. Its base and first through third stories’ body are shaped as a “亞” Chinese character, displaying by the Mongolian influence, and fourth through tenth stories’ body is shaped as square, offering visitors a view of the unique style that amalgamates the cultural traits of both Goryeo and the Mongolians.

800-year-old Goryeo-Mongolian Pact and Korea-Mongolia Relationship in the 21st Century In 1990, Korea established diplomatic relations with the modern state of Mongolia. The Mongolian People’s Republic began its modern history as Asia’s first communist country in 1921. The democratic state of Mongolia was founded after the communist regime under Russian influence collapsed in 1990 amid a wave of openness towards de-Sovietization 70 years later, which led to the establishment of diplomatic relations between Mongolia and Korea. In retrospect, however, Korea’s direct diplomatic relationship with Mongolia dates back to 1219, 800 years ago. Goryeo and the Mongol Empire concluded a pact in 1219 creating what appears to be their first diplomatic relationship. This pact is very significant as it became the starting point of Goryeo-Mongolian relations.

Reading Between the Lines of Diplomatic History of Goryeo and Mongolia Eight hundred years ago, Goryeo began its formal diplomacy with Mongolia. Mongolia, which was emerging as a powerhouse in Northeast Asia at the time, appeared in the history of Goryeo after the Battle of Gangdongseong Castle in 1218 (5th year of Gojong) and profoundly affected the history of Goryeo for about 140 years until Goryeo’s anti-Yuan fight succeeded in 1356 (5th year of King Gongmin). Lee Ik-joo, professor of Korean history at the University of Seoul, was interviewed to take a look back on the Goryeo-Mongolian relationship and understand out what Goryeo’s diplomatic policy suggests to us.

Kim Chwi-ryeo: Protagonist of diplomacy to Mongol The 13th century was the age of Mongolia. Both in terms of world history and the history of the Goryeo Dynasty, the 40-year struggle and the ensuing Yuan intervention period was expressed as “Pax Mongolica” or “Pax Tatarica”, meaning “Mongol’s peace” in Latin. It was the period during which the Mongol Empire brought stability to Eurasia socially, culturally, and economically while ruling and managing the world.

Workshop on Korean history and the history of Korea-Mongol relations by Mongolian history teachers In cooperation with the International University of Ulaanbaatar (president Nam Ki-yeong) located in Mongol’s Ulaanbaatar, the Foundation hosted the “2019 workshop on Korean history and the history of Korea-Mongol relations by Mongolian history teachers” for Mongol’s 36 history and social studies teachers at the university’s international conference hall May 28-29. The workshop was held under the main theme of “Xiongnu and Korea’s ancient history”, with lectures delivered by six experts. The themes were Xiongnu’s history (Bartsureng, Institute of History and Archaeology, Mongolain Academy of Sciences), life and customs in Xiongnu (Namjil, Mongol International University of Ulaanbaatar), outcomes of archaeological research into Xiongnu (Erekzen, Institute of History and Archaeology, Mongolian Academy of Sciences), Gojoseon and Xiongnu (Park Seon-mi, Northeast Asian History Foundation), correlations between Xiongnu’s fine arts and Korea’s ancient fine arts (Jang Seok-ho, Northeast Asian History Foundation), and comparison of education on Xiongnu’s history in Mongol and Korea (Yeo Byeong-mu, Mongol International University of Ulaanbaatar).

“3·1운동의 현대적 계승과 국제질서” 제주포럼 재단세션
‘Modern inheritance of March 1st Movement and international order’ Foundation’s session in Jeju Forum The Jeju Forum, holding its 14th session this year, adopted the grand theme of “Asia Towards Resilient Peace: Cooperation and Integration”. As a joint executive organ of the Jeju Forum, the Foundation has formed a session every year related to historical reconciliation. The Foundation configured this year’s session under the headline “Modern Inheritance of the March 1st Movement and International Order” in consideration of the forum’s grand theme and the centennial of the March 1st Movement. Of the agendas of the Paris Peace Conference that became a background for the March 1st Movement, imperialism, the principle of self-determination, and post-colonialism were taken as topics of common interest. During the 90-minute conference chaired by Foundation president Kim Do-hyung, four members made presentations and one led the debate. The following summarizes the presentations and the answers to questions to introduce the views of the four speakers.

『20개 주제로 본 한일 역사 쟁점』
‘Korea-Japan Historical Issues Seen through 20 Topics’ Chill, strain, worst in history, ostracism. These are the modifiers from recent reports about Korea-Japan relations that can be seen without difficulty. A look at the flow of Korea-Japan relationships over the past 10 years shows that their ties were getting worse following President Lee Myung-bak’s visit to Dokdo in 2012 before seeking recovery after the Korea-Japan Comfort Women Agreement in December of 2016. However, their bilateral relationship entered the phase of an unheard-of strain in the wake of the announcement in December 2017 of the results of verification of the Korea-Japan Comfort Women Agreement by a task force of our government, our Supreme Court’s ruling concerning damage claims against Japanese companies for forced labor mobilization during Japan’s colonial rule in December the following year, and the patrol plane incident by Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force in December of the same year.

The Foundation's News The Foundation hosted a session of diplomacy and security under the theme of “modern inheritance of the March 1st Movement and international order” on May 29 during the 14th Jeju Forum (theme: Asia Towards Resilient Peace: Cooperation and Integration) held at the Jeju International Convention Center May 29-31. Seoul National University professor Park Myung-kyu, Waseda University professor Toyomi Asano, Hong Kong Shue Yan University professor Eou Chikin, and Foundation researcher Shin Hyo-seung made presentations in the session chaired by Foundation president Kim Do-hyung, and Choi Un-do, another researcher with the Foundation, moderated the debate. The session was a time for evaluating changes in perceptions about international order such as imperialism, the principle of national self-determination and decolonization experienced by the international community in the last century, and predicting the future.
