Looking Back on the Discovery of Princess Jeonghye's Epitaph Seventy Years Ago The year 2019 marks the seventieth year since Princess Jeonghye’s epitaph was discovered. An epitaph refers to an inscription that contains the name and title of as well as the deeds done by the deceased. For such details about Princess Jeonghye of Balhae, it took the world 1,269 years to find them on an epitaph that had been buried since 780. And as much as the epitaph of Princess Jeonghye has been acknowledged as an invaluable source to studying Balhae history, it has also become a subject of countless controversies. To commemorate the upcoming seventieth anniversary of the discovery of Princess Jeonghye’s epitaph, this article will offer a brief introduction to less known documents involving the epitaph and trends in Chinese research on the history of Balhae.

Excavating Balhae's Yeomju Castle Through a Borderless Friendship Between July 17 and August 17, 2018, the NAHF Research Institute of Ancient-Medieval Korean History successfully participated in the excavation of Balhae's Yeomju Castle in Kraskino, which falls under the Khasansky district of Primorsky Krai, Russia. The project was overseen by myself and the Russian Research Society for Balhae History headed by Professor Evgenia I. Gelman. Below is a review of progress made through this year's excavation and the historical significance of Yeomju castle.

Launching the Korea-China Historical Forum for Northeast Asian Peace On August 30, 2018, the Northeast Asian History Foundation invited twenty-four experts on Korean and Chinese history, Northeast Asia, or international politics to attend the "Korea-China Historical Forum for Northeast Asian Peace." The purpose of hosting the forum was to diagnose the gradually diversifying, increasing factors of conflict and cooperation between Korea and China since establishing diplomatic relations and ultimately create an academic foundation for building a peaceful Northeast Asian community.

Amenomori Hoshu, a Symbol of Joseon-Japan Amity Joseon Tongsinsa refers to diplomatic missions the king of the Korean kingdom Joseon officially sent to the chief ruler of Japan. How did Tongsinsa begin and what role did it perform as relations between the two countries went through change? The year of 2019 will mark the 590th year since the first Tongsinsa mission was sent in 1429, so this series called Tongsinsa Stories will review Joseon Tongsinsa as a cultural delegation representative of the Korean dynasty's diplomatic history with Japan.

NAHF News After opening on September 14, 2012 as the only museum about Dokdo located in a metropolitan area, Dokdo Museum Seoul celebrated its sixth anniversary by hosting the "Six Dokdo Stories" program throughout September 2018. Groups of families visiting the museum were particularly eager to participate in the program's six different events that involved posting pictures of their visit on social media, taking a quiz about Dokdo, writing postcards to officers guarding Dokdo, creating newspaper articles about Dokdo, making Dokdo-themed key chains, and watching the animation "Gangchi the Dokdo Guard." The museum also extended its visiting hours until nine o'clock on September 14 and offered a special lecture in the evening by NAHF Research fellow Hong Seong-keun on "Meeting Dokdo in Seoul." Having welcomed around 230,000 visitors over the past six years, Dokdo Museum Seoul has settled down as the place to visit in Seoul for anyone who wishes to learn about the Korean island Dokdo.
