Carefully Approaching and Strategically Managing Historical Issues Between Korea and Japan On April 4, 2017, the Japanese ambassador returned to his post after being summoned to his home country over the installation of a statue of peace in front of the Japanese general consulate in Busan. The longest withdrawal yet for a Japanese ambassador shows that the diplomatic tension between Korea and Japan as well as the negative public sentiment toward one another has only been growing worse. At times like these, Professor Lee Won-deog, based on his extensive experience in studying the history of Korea-Japan relations, shares his ideas on how historical issues can be resolved between the two countries and which direction their respective diplomatic efforts should head toward.

East Asian Significance of the Solar Terms as a World Heritage A total of 33 new elements have been added to the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritages through the 11th UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage that took place at Addis Ababa, Ethiopia between November 28 and December 2, 2016. Among the newly inscribed elements, five were jointly submitted for inscription by more than two different countries. The Republic of Korea managed on its own to have its culture of Jeju female divers (haenyeo) inscribed, making it the nineteenth Korean element to be included in the representative list. Korea was also able to jointly have falconry listed as an element with seventeen other countries.

2017년도 제1회 상고사 토론회 -흉노와 동호 등 제3세력과의 관계를 중심으로 고조선의 강역을 재검토하다-
First NAHF Ancient Korean History Symposium of 2017 -Reexamining Gojoseon's Dominion Through the Xiongnu and Donghu- On March 22, 2017, the Northeast Asian History Foundation held its first forum on ancient Korean history for 2017 at the press conference room on the nineteenth floor of the Korea Press Center. The Foundation has continued to host symposiums for the purpose of introducing various opinions on ancient Korean history. A total of four were held in 2016 under the themes "Wanggeomseong and the Han Commanderies," "Where is Paesu, the Border between Gojoseon and Han (漢)?" "Where is Manfanhan, the border between Gojoseon and Yan?" and "The Location of the Lelang Commandery." The Foundation also arranged a group of researchers and opinion leaders to take a field trip to the former Liaoxi province where a discussion was held onsite as well. Such activities have created opportunities to examine controversial issues surrounding the history of Gojoseon by studying its relations with Chinese dynasties such as Yan, Jin, and Han.

Academic Conference "The Construction and Operation of Balhae's Donggyeong Yongwonbu" -Balhae's Lasting Internationality in East Asia- On April 14, 2017, the Northeast Asian History Foundation held at its grand conference room an international academic conference under the theme "The Construction and Operation of Balhae's Donggyeong Yongwonbu." The purpose of the conference, which was jointly hosted with the Association of Koguryo Balhae, was to reexamine the historical significance in constructing and operating Donggyeong, or the eastern capital among the five capitals of the ancient Korean kingdom Balhae. Donggyeong's administrative metropolis used to be located at Palyeonseong (Baliancheng), which is today's Hunchun (琿春) in Jilin Province, China. Presentations and in-depth discussions took place to determine the significance of Balhae remains by comparing excavation reports that have so far been released.

The Oroqen, the Key to the Mystery of East Asia's Hunting Culture The Oroqens are an ethnic group of people living around the city of Hulunbeier (呼倫貝爾市) in Inner Mongolia and Xing'anling (興安嶺) of China's Heilongjiang Province. Because they reside at the border areas of China and Russia, Russians refer to them as the "Evenki." There are now less than 10,000 of these Tungusic people and their culture is on the brink of extinction.
