Cumulating Academically Reliable Achievements The Northeast Asian History Foundation (NAHF) has reached its tenth anniversary as of the year 2016. To commemorate the occasion, the NAHF newsletter is featuring a series of interviews to review the progress NAHF activities have made over the past decade and to receive candid advice for the Foundation to move forward. In this month's issue, Lee Hoon, the former director of NAHF's Dokdo Research Institute, recommends the direction the Foundation should head toward in 2017 based on her understanding of the current trends on issues involving northeast Asian history and territory.

The Dawenkou (大汶口) Culture of Body Modification The rather unfamiliar Neolithic people by the name of Dongyi primarily lived in today's Shandong Province (山東省) between 4,300 BCE and 2,600 BCE. Because the temperature at Shandong Province was two to three degrees higher at the time, the area used to be a habitat for animals like the Yangtze crocodile, elephants, and Père David's deer (Elaphurus davidianus), which are now witnessed to the south of the Yangtze.

서애(西厓) 류성룡(柳成龍)에 대한 몇 가지 단상
Reflections on Seoae (西厓) Ryu Seong-ryong (柳成龍) In September of 1562, Ryu Seong-ryong (柳成龍, 1542-1607) with the pen name Seoae (西厓) visited Dosan seodang (陶山書堂), a Confucian academy's lecture hall, to gain wisdom from Yi Hwang (李滉). As soon as Ryu Seong-ryong finished introducing himself, this is what Yi Hwang, one of the most renowned erudite scholars of Confucianism at the time, said to the students around him. "This man has been sent from the heavens and is destined to accomplish great things later on." The scholar's discerning eye had immediately recognized the young man's potential and remarkable capabilities and had clearly expected Ryu Seong-ryong to succeed in dedicating himself to protect the lives of the Joseon people.
