Toward Autonomous Academic Research as of the year 2016. To commemorate the occasion, the NAHF newsletter is featuring a series of interviews to review the progress NAHF activities have made over the past decade and to receive candid advice for the Foundation to move forward. In this month's issue, Professor Han Suk-jung, who also serves as the president of Dong-A University and a member of NAHF's advisory committee, discusses research on Manchuria as well as the political and diplomatic relations between South Korea and Japan, and offers advice on the direction NAHF should be heading toward in the future.

Joseon People in Edo Japan The reason people from Joseon came to settle down in Edo Japan can be traced back to piroin (被虜人), the captives the Japanese army took from Joseon during the Imjin War of 1592-1598. Piroin is a term that was originally used in Joseon records and is now being used in Korean and Japanese academia as a term that refers to "Joseon civilian war captives the Japanese army abducted during the Imjin War."

Fact and Fiction in the Film Miljeong The film "Miljeong" released ahead of the Korean holiday Chuseok in 2016, titled "The Age of Shadows" in English, introduced its audience to the key figures of the righteous patriotic corps called Uiyeoldan that engaged in intransigent, activist independence movements. One of those key figures was Hwang Ok, the lead in the film. Featured in the film under the name Lee Jung-chool played by the actor Song Kang-ho, Hwang Ok was an enigmatic character who made it difficult to tell whether he was a Japanese cop or an independence activist.
