Research for the Development of South Korea-Japan Relations The Northeast Asian History Foundation (NAHF) has reached its tenth anniversary as of the year 2016. To commemorate the occasion, the NAHF newsletter is featuring a series of interviews to review the progress NAHF activities have made over the past decade and to receive candid advice for the foundation to move forward. In this month's issue, Dr. Han Bae-ho, former professor at Korea University who also served as the first president of the Korean Association of Contemporary Japanese Studies and president of the Korean Political Science Association, discusses politics in South Korea and Japan and offers an outlook on the relations between the two countries as well as advice on the direction NAHF should be heading toward in the future.

Geopolitical Background to the Treaty of Nerchinsk This year of 2016 marks the fourth centenary of the Later Jin dynasty's foundation. On February 17, 1616, Nurhaci founded the Later Jin and designated Hetu Ala (today's Xinbin county in China's Liaoning province) as the dynasty's capital. He declared himself Khan and the era name as Tianming. Despite the drastically changing state of international affairs since its foundation, the Later Jin managed to maintain its relations with the Korean kingdom of Joseon without running into any major clashes. Then everything changed after King Injo ascended to the throne in Joseon with the eruption of two large-scale wars, the invasion by the Manchus in 1627 known as Jeongmyo horan and a second invasion in 1636 known as Byeongja horan.

Bak Ho-in and the Spread of Joseon Tofu in Kōchi Prefecture The reason people from Joseon came to settle down in Japanese society during the Edo period was because they had originally been brought to Japan as piroin (被虜人), or captives of the Imjin War of 1592-1598. A majority of those war captives ended up in the areas of Kyushu (九州), Chūgoku (中國), and Shikoku (四國) where many Japanese feudal lords known as daimyō participated in the invasion of Joseon. That is why relatively more piroin wound up in western Japan. Many of them chose to stay there in villages named "Tojin-machi" (唐人町) or "Korai-machi" (高麗町) that were actually designated to accommodate Joseon piroin who became Japanese residents.

The Film Assassin and Korean Female Independence Activists Koreans are reminded of independence activists on national holidays like the Independence Movement Day on the first of every March or Liberation Day on the fifteenth of every August. Nevertheless, it is still difficult for people to fathom the burden such activists had to carry when Imperial Japan had deprived them of their own country. It is only possible to sense a fraction of that burden through stories telling what sort of life those activists lead and how many of them sacrificed their lives without hesitation for the sole purpose of liberating their country.

The Silla Reformer Choe Chi-won and Political Changes in East Asia The above is an excerpt from the poem "Beomhae" (泛海), meaning vast sea, by Choe Chi-won (857~?). This excerpt gained much attention when the Chinese President Xi Jinping quoted it in his welcoming address for the South Korea-China summit in 2013. He also mentioned the verse "Hwagaedong (in Korea) is another world in a gourd bottle" from Choe Chi-won's poem Hwagaedong in his welcoming remarks at the ceremony launching the "Visit China Year" in South Korea. Why then did the Chinese president particularly choose words by Choe Chi-won from the ancient Korean kingdom of Unified Silla as keywords for South Korea-China cultural exchange in the twenty-first century?
