Commemorating the 10th Anniversary of NAHF: Expectations for NAHF Enhancing Research Capabilities to Evolve into an Internationally Recognized Institute The Northeast Asian History Foundation (NAHF) has reached its tenth anniversary as of the year 2016. To commemorate the occasion, the NAHF newsletter will be featuring a series of interviews with the past presidents of NAHF and the chairmen of its advisory committee to review the progress NAHF activities have made over the last decade and to receive candid advice for the foundation's development. In this month's issue, chair professor Kim Yong-deok of the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, who served at the first president of NAHF, offers advice on where NAHF should be heading in the future based on the current situation and trends on issues regarding the history and territories of Northeast Asia.

A Review of Agwan pacheon (俄館播遷) "Agwan pacheon" refers to the incident in which King Gojong of Joseon fled to and sojourned at the Russian legation for about one year between February 11, 1896 and February 20, 1897. As an incident almost unprecedented throughout world history, many of the facts involved in it are yet to be uncovered, including the origin of the incident's name.

The Movie "Gwanghae": The Transformation of a Naked King It's sad to think about the movie "Gwanghae" for two reasons. One is because of the response I get whenever I ask the following questions when giving special lectures. "Has anyone here read my book?" I'm usually lucky to find one or two hands raised out of a hundred. Then when I ask "Anyone watched the movie Gwanghae?", most in the audience raise their hands. The movie "Gwanghae: The Man Who Became King" (Gwanghe: Wangi dwoen namja) was released just when I had published my book "Gwanghaegun, That Dangerous Mirror" (Gwanghaegun, Geu wiheomhan geoul), which was written from conducting research with the general public. That timely coincidence directed many questions my way with one of the most popular being "Is there really a fifteen-day gap in "The Diaries of Gwanghaegun" (Gwanghaegun ilgi)?"

Nurhaci Builds an Empire from Thirteen Suits of Armor The Jurchens, who now refer to themselves as the Manchus, used to be people without a nation until they founded the Qing dynasty. There weren't even that many of them, about 1.5 million around the early seventeenth century. In short, they didn't used to have much of a presence. It would be unnecessary to go any further than to explain that, up until the middle of the Joseon dynasty in Korea, they used to serve Joseon as their parent state.

Weary Joseon Lives Underneath Spring Rays at Suncheon waeseong Spring tends to be an exhilarating season for everyone, but it is especially so for those studying history. That is because it is when the subtle enthusiasm that usually arises at the beginning of a new semester and academic year follows students along the field trips they embark on in the warm rays of spring. The enthusiasm further escalates if the destination of such a field trip turns out to be in the southern parts of Korea where scents of spring permeate more deeply. With that same sense of enthusiasm, we set off for the city of Suncheon in the province of South Jeolla.
