한·일 50년 역사 앞에 겸허하자
Let's Be Humble Before the 50-Year History of Korea-Japan Relations The 22nd day of June this year will mark the 50th anniversary of the signing of the agreement to 'normalize diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan.' This is a good opportunity for the two countries as their closest neighbors to celebrate as they look back and refresh their memory of the spirit of good-neighborliness that has been developed between them over the past fifty years, and also look forward and try to build a better future together for the next fifty to a hundred years. Unfortunately, however, the two countries are going backwards to being their "(geographically) close yet (emotionally) distant neighbors" because their relations have been strained recently and this has affected not only politics but also the people, making their sentiment toward the other country significantly worse than before. "Tripartite Partnership Key to Peaceful and Prosperous Future for Northeast Asia" Editor's Note: The United States and China are fiercely vying for supremacy over Asia; while China is trying to construct the Belt (帶) of overland and marines routes that will link Asia, the United States is trying to build the Network (網) of an integrated Asia-Pacific with the Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership (TPP). Against this backdrop, the two recent Chinese initiatives, ‘One Belt, One Road (一帶一路)' and the 'Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB),’ were discussed at an experts seminar held by the NAHF on April 14 (Tue), 2015. Conference on the Government-Authorized Japanese Middle School Textbooks for 2015"Japanese Social Studies Textbooks for Middle School Reduced to the Abe Administration's Political Tools" References to Dokdo were contained in some of the government-approved Japanese textbooks for middle school in 2011 (four out of four geography, seven out of seven civics, and one out of seven history textbooks). Four years later, all the Japanese textbooks for middle school that passed the government's screening (four geography, six civics and eight history textbooks) contain references to Dokdo, according to the 2015 textbook screening results released by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). This is a reflection of the Japanese government's determination to teach the middle school students in their country about Dokdo as an issue of concern between Korea and Japan. The latest Japanese textbook screening results were reviewed and discussed at an emergency conference held by the NAHF on April 6, 2015. Taro Utsunomiya's Diary: An Unofficial Record Detailing Imperial Japan's Suppression of Korea ▲ Taro UtsunomiyaOnce Japan occupied the Korean Empire in August 1910 and established the General-Government for colonial rule, Japan began what is known as 'military rule,' ruthlessly exploiting Korea and its people and suppressing any resistance. At the same time, to glorify their colonial rule and brainwash the Korean people into giving up resistance, Japanese colonial authorities founded three newspapers that were published in three different languages: The Kyungsung (Seoul) Daily in Japanese; The Daily News in Korean; and The Seoul Press in English. While being integrated and separated, these three newspapers served as the mouthpieces of Japanese colonial authorities starting from August 1910. The Patient and Persistent Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu Ushering in the Edo Shogunate Period ▲ Portrait of Ieyasu (at the Osaka Castle Museum)In the Sengoku period of 15th-century Japan, there were three major warlords: Oda Nobunaga (織田信長), Toyotomi Hideyoshi (豊臣秀吉), and Tokugawa Ieyasu (德川家康). Their personalities were so distinctively different from one another that they became the subject of an old joke: “What would the three warlords do　about a bird that refused to sing for them? Nobunaga would break the bird's neck. Hideyoshi would try everything to make the bird sing. Ieyasu would wait until the bird begins singing.”Apart from their political careers and what they mean in history, this joke shows that Ieyasu is remembered by the Japanese people as a man who ultimately rose to power with his 'patience and persistence.' Ieyasu was born in 1542 (or 1543) as the eldest son of Matsudaira Hirotada (松平広忠), the lord of Okazaki (岡崎) Castle in Mikawa (三河)(present-day Aichi Prefecture). The NAHF's Promotional Activities at the AAG Annual MeetingThe NAHF's Booth at the World's Largest Association of Geographers Highly Effective in Promoting Dokdo and the East Sea I was in Chicago from April 20 to 26, 2015 to conduct promotional activities during the 2015 AAG (Association for American Geographers) Annual Meeting that are designed to promote Korea's sovereignty over Dokdo and the wide use of the name East Sea.Established in 1904, the AAG is one of the largest organizations of geographers in the world, with over 10,000 members from sixty countries. The AAG Annual Meetings are held in American cities. For example, Tampa, Florida played host to the last year's AAG Annual meeting. At this year's meeting held in Chicago, Illinois, there were over 5,000 papers presented, about 70 exhibition booths installed. The Spirit of Young Koreans Revives the National Movement ▲ 중앙고 교내 610만세운동 기념비King Sunjong, the last king of the Joseon Dynasty and a tragic emperor of the Korean Empire, died on April 26, 1926. It was a time when independence movements and armed conflicts in Korea and abroad were losing momentum due to the ideological conflict among the leaders and imperial Japan's suppression in the name of so-called 'cultural rule' which started after the March 1st Movement and had been becoming increasingly clever. King Sunjong's funeral was set to take place on June 10, and it was seen an occasion to have another public protest so as to rekindle the national movement. The June 10th Movement was planned and carried out solely by students, in part because they were not the main target of Japan's close watch following the March 1st Movement.
