Northeast Asian History Foundation aims to become a think tank that will lead reconciliation and coexistence in East Asia. Northeast Asian History Foundation is one of the few institutions in the world that pursue history reconciliation. Launched in 2006, our Foundation has made a lot of efforts to resolve conflicts over historical and territorial issues between Korea and surrounding nations. However, as we have seen the Korea-Japan summit held in Kyoto at the end of last year where 'the issue of comfort women for the Japanese Army' emerged as a core topic of the summit discussion, it is very difficult to reconcile history between countries that were once hostile to each other, meaning that there is still a long rugged way ahead for the Foundation.

"Flexible approaches to the cultures of Korea and Japan will reshape our thoughts on the history as well." For peaceful resolution of history issues in Northeast Asia, our Foundation has been inviting renowned scholars of the world in our efforts to let the world know the current situation of history disputes and also establish a continuous human network with scholars in various countries of the world. Dr. Kenneth R. Robinson, who is studying Korea’s foreign relations history during the early period of Joseon Dynasty, was invited by our Foundation and conversed with the Foundation’s Research Fellow LEE Myongchan who carries out researches at Dokdo Research Institute in relation to defending our sovereign rights over Dokdo. 고구려ㆍ발해사 국제학술회의 개최 고구려ㆍ발해사 연구의 새로운 모색
An International Academic Conference on the Histories of Koguryo and Balhae New pursuit of researches on the histories of Koguryo and Balhae An academic conference was held in Vladivostok for two days on November 28 and 29, 2011 under a subject titled "A new horizon for studies of the histories of Koguryo and Balhae". Valdivostok is a city located in the state of Primorsky Krai of Russia with a population of around 600,000. The city was the naval base for the Far East Fleet of the former USSR and is also well known to us as the eastern end of the Cross-Siberia Railway. But, not many people know that this is the place closely linked to our national history since the very beginning of our history, and the area that used to belong to Koguryo and Balhae was the base for the two countries' vibrant marine activities. The international academic conference held in Vladivostok in early winter of 2011 had a special meaning perhaps because there was a dramatic element in it that the past and the present were meeting together despite the existence of such a long time gap between the two.

A Joint Academic Conference by Northeast Asian History Foundation and Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute Law and Natural Science meet together to discuss about Dokdo and East Sea Northeast Asian History Foundation held the 3rd NAHF-KORDI joint academic conference with Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute on November 29, 2011 at the East Sea Branch of the Institute located in Jukbyeon-myeon, Uljin-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do. First of all, this academic conference has a meaning as this is the only academic conference held by this Foundation, an institute of humanities and social sciences, jointly with an institute of natural science.

The Unified Multiethnic Nation Theory in Chinese History Textbooks China's 'Unified Multiethnic Nation Theory' unfairly claims that all other national communities that rose and fell in the past within the present territory of China were under the rule and control of Chinese dynasties even though China's historical territory and its governed area were different from its present territory. A more severe problem is that such position is reflected in the country's history textbooks that should have been based on the truth.

Jang Bo-go, The Trade Prince of the Maritime Commercial Empire You will probably know a TV drama titled 'Haesin' aired with great popularity several years ago. Haesin means 'God of the Sea'. Inspired by the deification of JANG Bo-go (?~841) in Japan, a novel was written about him which was then adapted for the drama. What then was JANG Bo-go that made him deified in Japan?

A suggestion for trust-based exchanges between Korea and China Recently, the Chinese Central Television (CCTV) showed a ceremony celebrating the 10th anniversary of China's becoming a member of WTO. It has been stressed that the trade volume has increased and the customs tariff has been reduced from 15% to 9%. It has been said, however, that further studies are needed on trade disputes. They repeatedly mentioned 'change'. I have been in China for 4 months. Though I have been here only for a short time, I can actually feel the 'change'. Everything is 'changing' fast. It is seen in their material life among other things.
