In Search of Hwangjeguk There is such a dearth of historical record on ancient history that even the smallest leads become the starting point of a large-scale study. That is precisely the background behind my paper that uncovered the standing of Balhae. My paper showed that while Balhae presented itself as a wangguk [kingdom] externally, it held itself as a hwangjeguk [emperordom] internally. That is to say, I was able to shed light on Balhae's dual system of identity, thereby discrediting in one blow China's claim that Balhae was not an independent state.

"The Prerequisite to a Shared Understanding of History is the Acceptance of Differences" With growing interest in the East Asian Community, many point out that the first step to realizing such a vision is overcoming the conflicts engendered by the history of colonial rule and imperialist aggression a century ago. The development of joint history textbooks, along with joint history research, is proposed as a measure to overcoming historical conflicts. However, there are still ongoing controversies over the textbooks in current use. Is a joint history book like that of Europe possible for East Asia? We spoke with Dr. Falk Pingel, who took part in numerous history textbook projects around the world as the Deputy Director of the world-renowned Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research. After retiring from his post at the institute, he is currently in Seoul as a visiting scholar at the Northeast Asian History Foundation.

Calling for More Interdisciplinary Studies to Promote the Use of the toponym "East Sea" I organize my thoughts on The Hague seminar aboard KLM 1018, on my way home to Incheon International Airport from London with a layover in Amsterdam. I would first like to talk about a little incident at London Heathrow Airport. I was at the check-in counter waiting to get my boarding pass when the machine did not recognize my passport. The KLM staffer was kind enough to bypass the automated system and manually issue me a boarding pass. But that was not the end. I hit another snag with the processing of my luggage. A different KLM staffer took issue with the fact that my personal information could not be located in their database. It was only after a prolonged bout of explanation and verification was I allowed to get on my flight.

Comparative Study of the Key Issues of Balhae History in East Asia Research on Balhae history has never been more active in Korea. It cannot be denied that there have been a growing number of researchers and research findings despite the difficult research environment. However, this phenomenon has not been the natural outcome of Korean academia's self-reflection on the dearth of research on Balhae history. Rather, it has been put in motion by external factors. That is to say, many studies on Balhae were undertaken in response to the Northeast Project and other instances of China's distortion of Balhae history. Comparative Study of the Key Issues of Balhae History in East Asia [hereafter, Comparative Study] was no exception and was carried out in order to establish a new research direction in the study of Balhae history as a means of countering the Northeast Project.

Wu Zetian: China's One and Only Empress Wu Zetian [則天武后, 624~705], a Tang dynasty empress, rests in the Qianling Mausoleum, located some 85km from Xi'an in China's Shaanxi province. The mausoleum complex also houses the tomb of Emperor Gaozong. The Qianling Mausoleum never fell prey to tomb robbers and is touted as one of only two royal tombs in China (the other being the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor) that remains perfectly preserved.

American Teachers' Encounter with Living Korean History My visit to my homeland last summer break was special. Accompanying me to Korea were 21 high school teachers selected from around the United States. The visit was an onsite historical survey program organized by the NCTA (National Consortium for Teaching about Asia), an initiative to promote and facilitate learning and teaching about Asia, and the Northeast Asian History Foundation for American high school AP (Advanced Placement Program) World History teachers.

Ahn Yong-bok in Aoshima and "Culture Shock" The following anecdote about Ahn Yong-bok can be found in Reflections on Takeshima [竹島考], an early 19th-century Japanese work. Also, according to an old man, the Joseon men ate up all the snakes on the island during their stay there. This led to a surge in the field mouse population, resulting in severe crop damages. The residents caught snakes from outside the island and let them loose. It took a year before the damages abated. However, the authenticity of this story cannot be confirmed.
