Diplomatic Conflicts and Mistaken Historical Perception It was during the Unified Silla period that trade relations with Japan flourished more than ever before. Most textbooks and introductory history books focus on trade relations with Tang China during the period, but trade between Unified Silla and Japan was also very active. Based on Korean and Japanese historical records, there were 39 envoy dispatches from Silla to Japan and 25 envoy dispatches from Japan to Silla, respectively, between 670 and 779. Given that there were only 10 rounds of envoy dispatches from Japan to Tang China during the same period, we can see just how extensive trade relations were between Silla and Japan.

Becoming True Friends with Japan Born in 1940. He was the first Korean to be appointed professor at Japan's Tokyo University. He was the professor of economics at Kyungpook National University from 1971 to 2003. He also served as a member of Forum 21 of Japan's Asahi Shimbun; member of the Korea's Presidential Advisory Council of Education, Science & Technology; and the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Energy. He has been serving as the president of Yuhan University since August 2003.

Korea and Japan's Adoption of Western Civilization The 100 Years Leading up to 1910 A three-day academic conference co-hosted by the Korea-Japan Cultural Fund and the Northeast Asian History Foundation was launched on June 11. East Asia experienced a massive influx of Western civilization in the 19th century. Japan undertook the Meiji Restoration and modernized early on. Korea, on the other hand, lagged behind in the wave of modernization and became Japan's victim. Japan's forced annexation of Korea in 1910 inflicted damage on both nations, and even today, it is a major impediment in the effort to bring about a peaceful regional order and Asian community.

Incongruous Borders, Lost Peoples The Case of Russia and Eastern Europe This research project focuses on Russia and the ex-Soviet bloc as a representative instance of intensified border and ethnic conflicts in the post-Cold-War period and aims to take the discussion on the topic to a new level. The Cold War, characterized by the U.S.-Soviet bipolar world order, came to an abrupt end within a relatively short period of time (1989-1991) with the dissolution of the Eastern bloc and the Soviet Union. As the centrifugal force went out of control, the complexities of border and ethnic issues grew extremely complex.

Goh Jok-yu: A Man of Foresight There was another person who went to Tang China prior to the fall of Goguryeo. It was Goh Jok-yu, who had risen to a high government rank in Tang, second only to the descendents of Yeon Gaesomun. If it had not been for the discovery of his tombstone, no one would have known about Goh. The tombstone was discovered in Luoyang in Henan, China. It is in the shape of a square, 58.5cm on each side. The epitaph consists of 33 lines, 34 characters per line.

Japan's Perception of Korea in an NHK Documentary With the monsoon season in full swing, Tokyo is ushering in the summer with great enthusiasm for the World Cup. Fuji Television is airing the Korean TV drama Iris and introducing kimchi stew and other Korean dishes. That is, the "Korean Wave" is still hot on Japanese TV networks. Against such a backdrop, NHK produced a five-part documentary series entitled Japan and the Joseon Peninsula (Korean Peninsula) to mark the centennial of Japan's annexation of Korea.

고구려성을 찾아서
In Search of Goguryeo Fortresses Back when it was difficult to see traces of Goguryeo history in person, we only got occasional glimpses of Goguryeo fortresses in media reports or illustrations in academic texts. Korean scholars had surveyed the fortresses on the flatland along Imjin River and the fortification on Mount Acha. Nevertheless, those fortresses had only been examined by a small number of researchers and relevant officials and were not well-known.
