Dokdo, Island or Rocks?: A Patriotic Misunderstanding There are very few issues in Korea today that receive as much attention from the general public as the Dokdo issue. The Dokdo issue has been a persistent source of conflict between Korea and Japan since the end of World War II. Nevertheless, until the early 1990s, the issue rarely blew over. It merely lingered in the background as potential source of bilateral conflict.

Historical Dialogue: A Shortcut to Resolving Korea-Japan Historical Issues Cho, Gwang He served as the president of the Research Society of Korean History and the chairperson of the second Korea-Japan Joint History Research Committee from 2007 to 2009. He is currently a professor at the Department of Korean History at Korea University. His key works include Issues in Korea-Japan History, 'East Asian Context in the Study of Korean History' (the Journal of the Korean Historical Association, 2006), 'Adoption and Circulation of Books on Western Studies in the Late Joseon Period' (KOREAN CULTURAL STUDIES, 2006).

The Meeting of Diverse Views on Goguryeo History and Seeking New Perspectives The Association for Asian Studies (AAS) held its four-day annual conference, which consisted of 282 sessions. Indicative of the U.S. academia's growing interest in China as well as the growing influence of China itself, 87 sessions were devoted to China-related issues. There were some 20 sessions on Korea-related topics, and many of them had been organized by Korean scholars.

Isabu: A Clever General Who Incorporated Dokdo into Korean History We can learn about Isabu's life from historical sources such as Samsuk Sagi, Samguk Yusa, and the Stele by King Jinheung of Silla Period in Danyang County ("Stele" hereafter). Isabu was a general and politician during the reign of King Jinheung of the Silla dynasty. His family name was Kim, and he was the fourth-generation descendent of King Nameul. Isabu is listed as "Isabu [伊史夫]" on the stele, as "Ijong [伊宗]" in Samguk Yusa, and as "Ijilbu [伊叱夫]" in Nihon Shoki.

After Attending the AAS Book Exhibition The 2010 Annual Conference of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) was held from March 25 to 28 in Philadelphia, PA, USA. Along with the conference was a book exhibition of publications related to Asian history. Reservations for the 132 booths were completed way before the conference, demonstrating the Americans' great interest in Asian studies.

A Proposal Concerning the Overseas Promotion of Dokdo and the East Sea While the Korean people were following the news of the naval ship that sank in the West Sea, Japan authorized a textbook that claims Dokdo is Japanese territory. It is all the more agitating given that this is not Japan's first attempt at geographical and historical distortions. What is worrisome, however, is that Korea will merely repeat the cycle of public anger followed by apathy or that the issue will die out after a bout of heated debates.
