A Japanese Youth's Search for Truth The Wednesday Demonstration in front of the Japanese Embassy in Korea is heading toward its 900th session. The Wednesday Demonstration, which began on January 8, 1992, has been ongoing for nearly two decades. Nevertheless, the Japanese government is delaying making an apology and offering compensation to the victims of the Japanese military "comfort women" system. At noon on March 9, at the 856th Wednesday Demonstration, we met with MURAYAMA Itpei, a researcher at the History Museum at the House of Sharing. MURAYAMA speaks in a low, gentle voice. His sincerity and the depth of his thoughts are unusual for such a young person, whether in Korea or Japan.
Art of Persuasion in a Historical Debate Last fall, I had the opportunity to teach a course on "Historical Disputes in Northeast Asia" at Cornell University in New York. Most of the people who took the class were Korean-American students or Korean students who had completed an advanced-level Korean language class at Cornell or those whose Korean proficiency was recognized to be at this caliber. The course consisted of nine weeks of lectures on what we call the "seven pending issues," followed by two weeks of examining the theories and practices for their resolution. The final two weeks were devoted to student presentations on the following topics: "East Sea v. Sea of Japan:　Contrasting Logic and Strategies for the Future," "Japan's Dialectic of the Past and the Future to which it Aspires," "Founding and Development of Gojoseon," "Queen Min:　Latest Research Trends and Reassessment" and "AN Yong-bok's Activities in Japan."

Seeking the Significance of the March 1st Movement International Lecture Meeting commemorating the 90th Anniversary of the March 1st Movement The March 1st Movement was a year-long national independence movement against Japan that began with the declaration of Korea's independence in Seoul on March 1, 1919. Ninety years have since passed. Perhaps it is because of the weight of time that our memory of the momentous event has faded. I cannot but wonder whether remembrance of the March 1st Movement has turned into a matter of habit, something we do without much thought when this time of the year rolls around. It is my hope that we remind ourselves of the words on the entrance to the Auschwitz concentration camp: "One who forgets the past, condemns himself to relive it again."

Demonstrating Our Love for the Land through the Arts and Culture Dokdo Branch, Society of Korean Poets One hundred poets from the Society of Korean Poets went to Dokdo, Ulleung-gun to hold an arts festival. It was to express their anger over the establishment of Takeshima Day by Japan's Shimane Prefecture in 2005 and over Japan's unfounded claims over Dokdo. The arts festival, under the theme "Korean Blood Flows Through These Rocks," featured various artistic performances and poetry and articulated the poets' determination to safeguard Korean territory. The participating poets decided to carry on Dokdo protection activities in Korea and abroad, and this is how the Dokdo Branch of the Society of Korean Poets was founded.

Translation and Annotation of the "Monographs on Foreign States" from the Standard Histories of China Records of the Grand Historian (史記; also known in English as the Records of the Grand Scribe) chronicles the pre-Han dynasties of China. Thereafter, dynastic histories were recorded in the jizhuanti style (紀傳體; annals-biography style). These historical records, as a group, are called the Standard Histories of China (正史). Together with the New History of the Yuan (新元史), compiled during the Republic of China period, the collection is referred to as the Twenty-Five Histories. When the Draft History of Qing (靑史稿), not included in the Standard Histories of China, is also added, the compilation is called the Twenty-Six Histories.
