도서 소개

이 책은 『고구려의 문화와 사상』을 영문으로 번역한 고구려 관련 영문도서이다. 고구려하면 떠오르는 이미지는 무(武)를 숭상하는, 한국 역사상 가장 강력한 국가라는 것이다. 국왕부터가 전사로서 전투에 앞장섰으며, 생활을 반영하는 고분벽화만 하더라도 전쟁이나 사냥이 중요한 주제였다. 이러한 이미지로 말미암아 자칫하면 고구려의 경우 ‘문화는 한수 아래’라는 인상을 주기 쉽다. 고구려 문화의 실상, 나아가 우수성은 문헌 기록과 함께 고고학적 자료를 통해서도 입증되고 있다. 문화의 개념을 어떻게 규정하느냐에 따라 다르겠지만, 종교사상·미술·음악·무용·복식·어문학·과학 기술 등 여러 분야에서 진행되었다. 나아가 최근에는 각 분야의 성과를 묶어 고구려 문화를 종합적으로 이해하려는 연구성과까지 제시되고 있다.
