이 책은 제1회 동아시아 역사 화해를 주제로 개최되었던 국제포럼(2007.10. 서울)에서 발표된 논문을 모은 것이다. 동북아역사재단과 유네스코 한국위원회가 매년 공동 주최하는 이 포럼은 단절과 갈등을 넘은 대화를 통해 동아시아의 역사 대화를 새로운 차원으로 승화시켜 나가고 있다는 평가를 받고 있다. 이 포럼에서 참석자들은 국경을 넘어선 역사학의 가능성과 교과서 문제를 중심으로 한 역사 화해의 경험에 대한 대화를 나누고 있다. 이를 통해 공생의 미래질서를 열어가기 위해서는 역사학의 대화가 필요하며 새로운 방법을 모색해 나가야 함을 확인하였다. 자국사 중심의 칸막이 속에 갇혀있는 분절된 역사인식의 극복 없이 미래를 위한 역사 비전은 생성될 수 없다. 이런 의미에서 동아시아의 지식인들이 미래 역사의 진운을 뒷받침할 학문적 책무를 공감해 가고 있는 이 포럼이야말로 값진 의미를 갖는 것이 아닐 수 없다.
