The Northeast Asian History Foundation conducted the “Ulleungdo–Dokdo Educational Exploration Program” from June 4 to 7 for teachers from Dokdo Guardian Schools nationwide, as well as journalists covering the Ministry of Education and the Foundation. The program was organized to enhance future generations’ awareness of Korea’s sovereignty over Dokdo and to promote accurate historical understanding of Dokdo in schools and among the general public.

Teachers participating in the Dokdo Guardian School program departed from Yeongilman Port in Pohang and visited Ulleungdo and Dokdo, where they experienced firsthand the history, culture, and natural environment of the islands. In particular, on June 5, they landed on Dokdo and toured the area around the Dongdo pier, observing the geographical characteristics and ecological environment of Korea’s easternmost territory.

While in Ulleungdo, participants visited the Usan Kingdom Museum, the Suto History Exhibition Hall, the Ahn Yong-bok Memorial Hall, the Dokdo Volunteer Defenders Memorial Hall, and the Dokdo Museum. These visits provided opportunities to examine the historical connections between Ulleungdo and Dokdo and to learn about the history of efforts to safeguard Dokdo. Participants also explored major historical sites and locations related to Dokdo, reflecting on the historical and cultural significance of the islands.

Journalists covering the Ministry of Education and the Foundation also joined the program to report on Dokdo education in practice and to learn about the Foundation’s research achievements and future initiatives related to Dokdo. By sharing the same field experience, teachers and journalists contributed to expanding public awareness of the educational outcomes of the Dokdo Guardian School program and fostering broader public understanding of Dokdo.

Participating teachers exchanged examples of Dokdo education that can be applied in schools and discussed the significance of protecting Dokdo and practical ways to promote awareness among students. They noted that the exploration program deepened their understanding of Dokdo and pledged to further promote the importance of Dokdo education in both educational and media settings.

The Foundation plans to continue strengthening young people’s understanding of Dokdo and expanding awareness of its protection through the operation of Dokdo Guardian Schools, diverse experiential and educational programs, and cooperation with the media.
