On June 2, 2026, at 9:30 a.m., the Foundation held the “Ulleungdo–Dokdo Comprehensive Academic Survey Results Presentation and Academic Conference” under the theme “Ulleungdo and Dokdo Viewed Through Joseon-Era Inspection Missions (Suto)” in the conference hall on the 11th floor of the Foundation.

The event was organized to share the results of the comprehensive academic survey of Ulleungdo and Dokdo conducted in April 2026 and to discuss the historical significance and utilization of materials related to Joseon-era inspection missions (Suto). While building upon previous achievements in Dokdo studies, the Foundation selected the inspection missions to Ulleungdo as the central theme in order to discover new historical sources and research topics. To this end, it carried out an interdisciplinary field survey involving experts in history, archaeology, geography, and marine studies.

In Session I, titled “Contents and Activities of the Ulleungdo–Dokdo Comprehensive Academic Survey,” the survey process and major outcomes were introduced. Hong Seong-geun, Director of the Dokdo Center, presented the background and progress of the survey, explaining its historical significance and distinctive features. Subsequently, Senior Research Fellow Ko Gwang-ui unveiled the rubbings produced during the survey, including newly collected stone inscription rubbings, and discussed their potential academic and educational applications.

In Session II, presentations and designated discussions were held under the theme “Reexamining Historical Sources Related to Inspection Missions and Their Historical Continuity in Ulleungdo and Dokdo.” Presentations were delivered by Research Fellows Jang Jeong-su, Ko Gwang-ui, Moon Sang-myeong, and Kim Na-young, Curator Kim Bo-young, and Dr. Kim Yun-bae, Director of the Ulleungdo–Dokdo Ocean Research Station of the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST).

During the designated and general discussions that followed, participants confirmed the academic value and historical continuity of materials related to the inspection missions to Ulleungdo and emphasized the need for interdisciplinary research that comprehensively utilizes field materials such as stone inscriptions, inspection routes, and place names. In particular, the stone inscription rubbings and related historical remains identified through the survey were evaluated as important resources for understanding the historical reality of Ulleungdo and Dokdo from multiple perspectives.

Foundation Chairperson Park Ji-hang stated, “This conference provided an opportunity to review the achievements of the comprehensive academic surveys conducted thus far and to reaffirm historical truth and territorial continuity through historical sources and sites related to inspection missions.” She added, “It was a valuable occasion that elevated Dokdo studies to a new level.”
