The Northeast Asian History Foundation, in collaboration with the Korean Society of International Law (President Park Byung-do), held a joint academic conference on Thursday, August 14, in the Foundation’s main conference room under the theme “The Historical and International Legal Significance and Challenges of the 80th Anniversary of Liberation.” The conference examined the meaning of the 80th anniversary of liberation from the perspectives of sovereignty, human rights, and territory, and engaged in in-depth discussions on international human rights law issues related to the Japanese colonial period, as well as historical and international legal challenges for safeguarding sovereignty over Dokdo.

Experts from the fields of history, international law, and political science participated in the conference, engaging in in-depth presentations and discussions on the meaning of independence and liberation, the illegality of Japan’s colonial rule, the issue of Japanese military “comfort women” victims, the international law illegality of student forced mobilization, Japan’s territorial strategy, and the Dokdo issue.

President Jihang Park remarked, “This was a meaningful occasion where leading experts from various fields came together to shed light on the significance and challenges of the 80th anniversary of liberation from diverse perspectives,” adding, “I hope this academic conference will serve as a foundation for interdisciplinary research toward building a peace community in East Asia.”
