In association with the An Jung-Geun Harbin Society, the Northeast Asian History Foundation holds the “International Conference in Commemoration of the 100th Aniversity of the Heroic Act of Pariat An Jung Geun” on October 26 (Monday) and 27 (Tuesday), 2009 at the Members’ Conference Hall of the Korea Chamber of Commerce.
Held under the theme, “An Jung-geun’s thesis on peace of East Asia and the future of Northeast Asian peace community,” this symposium is designed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Korean independence activist’s assassination of Ito Hirobumi—then the governor-general of Korea—at the Harbin train station and bring together scholars from Korea, China and Japan to revisit his deed from a macroscopic and contemporary perspective.
“Properly understanding An’s ‘heroic act’ is an unavoidable task for people of Korea, Japan, China and other East Asian countries to build a relationship of trust in a genuine sense,” said Makino Eiji, a professor at Hosei University, Japan. “This kind of thinking is also crucial to address today’s global challenge of realizing world peace.”
Professor Totsuka Etsuro of Ryukoku University School of Law will make a presentation on the unlawfulness of the 1910 trial on An Jung-geun; Chairman Lee Tae-jin of the An Jung-geun Harbin Society will present his results of analysis on the investigation records on the assassination, archived in the diplomatic records library of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, that pointed out Korean Emperor Gojong and his aides as the masterminds.
A total of 12 presenters—including keynote speakers—and 15 panelists from Korea, China and Japan will take part in the two-day symposium.
