3rd International Forum on Historical Reconciliation in East Asia

On August 27-28, 2009, the Northeast Asian History Foundation (NAHF) holds the 3rd International Forum on Historical Reconciliation in East Asia, in association with the Korean and Vietnamese national commissions for UNESCO, at the Sejong Hall of Sejong Hotel, Seoul, Korea.

Marking its third year, the event is held under the theme of “Enhancing Mutual Understanding between Korea and Vietnam through History Education” and is expected to serve as an opportunity to broaden the horizon of historical reconciliation to Southeast Asia.

The forum will be attended by history and media experts from Vietnam, Korea, China, Japan and Australia to discuss various ways to encourage scholars and citizens in Korea and Vietnam to develop greater interests in and better understanding of each other.

Below is the schedule for the conference:

August 27, 2009 (Thursday)
Keynote speech
- Ngo Van Doanh (editor-in-chief, Journal of Southeast Asia Studies, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences): Promoting mutual historical and cultural understanding between Vietnam and Korea
- Yoo In-seon (Seoul National University): Korea’s perception of Vietnamese history and culture

Session I
- Nguyen Thi Thanh Huyen (Hanoi University, Vietnam): Promoting research on Korean history and culture in Vietnamese universities
- Kim Jong-wook (Chungwoon University): How to improve Korean institution and perception of Vietnamese history and culture for better understanding

Session II
- Nguyen Minh Ngok (Institute for Foreign Policy and Strategic Studies, Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam): Promoting Korean studies in Vietnam – Opportunities and challenges
- Kim Song-lan (Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies): Korea’s understanding of Vietnamese history and culture through the media
