Title : (Northeast Asian History Foundation Research Series 44)
Construction and Characteristics of Chinese High School History Textbooks
Kim, Ji Hoon et al.
Small Octavo Edition / 270 pages / 2010 / KRW12,000 (US$10) / ISBN 978-89-6187-205-8
The title analyzes the contents of Chinese high school history textbooks and examines the characteristics of history education in China. Korean scholars focus on the description of Korea and Korea-China relations in Chinese textbooks, but they paid little attention to the description of Chinese history. The title reviews the overarching direction for Chinese high school textbooks, and partly covers the description of Korean history in them. Today's China consists of the Han and many other ethnicities, and the history textbooks reflect the theory of "unified multi-ethnic state". In addition, the textbooks strongly emphasize the excellence and superiority of Chinese history. Since the Reform and Opening, traditional "historical perspective focusing on revolutions" has weakened and there has been a growing influence of "historical perspective concentrating on the rise and fall of civilizations", postmodernism, French Annales School etc on the study of history in China. Changes in historical perspectives are visible in various history textbooks for high school and university students. The title will help readers better understand how Chinese history is taught in schools.
